You're only young once
An old woman said to me
But how do you know when you are old?
I asked, inquisitively
For one day you were young
And then next you find out you are old?
With many years under your belt
And stories to be told?
Or is there a specific wrinkle
That you wait to see
That tells you that you're old now?
I ask, unapologetically
No, sweet child, there isn't one thing
She softly enlightens me
You'll know when the time's right
She answers, unequivocally
For one day when you're older
You'll look back upon your youth
And you'll realise you are far removed
Only then you'll see the truth
It will become apparent
Of how quickly time will pass
For you are only young once
And you'll realise it won't last

Beautiful and sensitive ❤️
Some very true observations, a wonderful poem
Sian, this is so well done! It almost feels like something you would talk about around a fire.
A sweet and well told story ❤️ we spend so long wanted to be old. Old enough to be independent. Old enough to drive. Old enough to work. Old enough to leave school. Youth wishes it away while the elderly wish it had slowed down.
