You Taught Me Well

It just took me awhile to truly learn the meaning of your actions

Silence screams at me as I open my eyes this morning,

The heart bursts in a spasm of sheer disbelief,

The raw emotion erases the optimistic view of the sun rising at dawn.

**

It’s going to be another first,

Another nail in our coffin of love,

Twisted into obscurity from today, blending into the future.

**

No celebration,

Another opportunity destroyed within your arrogance and my pain,

A loss, one that will be regretted in years to come.

**

A silent tear shimmies down my cheek,

The end has been slamming my heart all year,

But this rejection is the ultimate message of a relationship that can no longer exist.

**

Tomorrow is a monumental memory,

One that’ll haunt me year by year,

One you’ve chosen to destroy with your decision to neglect.

**

I asked for gentleness,

You chose destruction of the cruelest environment,

Relishing the right to decide without a care to the pain you’d cause.

**

A final twist in our destiny,

A message slammed against adversity,

Leaving me with no choice but to comply.

**

My sanity is wavering on the edge of the precipice of forgetfulness,

As you choose to give it the final push in oblivion,

Burying us forevermore.

**

This is the bed you’ve chosen for yourself with my total disregard,

Leaving me floundering in the deep oceans of despair,

Drowning on the choice you’ve made for me.

**

You held out a hand recently,

Presumably to offer the gift of my heart’s desire,

Then ripped it from my grip just a few weeks later.

**

Thank you for your cruel honesty,

For the lesson of substance you have repeated often over the year,

For you have taught me the precious lesson of how to live without you.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
