You Don’t Get to Win

Overcoming Scars

Once a child,

Always a child

In the minds of those

Who’ve been traumatized

By occasional whispers

Slowly morphing

Into relentless taunts

From across the playground.

Day after miserable day,

Each decision now scrutinized,

So as not to provoke

Further juvenile ridicule.

Despite your every attempt

To take away my dignity,

You never accounted for

My resilience and resolve.

The scars you caused

Will never leave me,

But my life is proof

They won’t control me.
