Women Are Not Puppets
A free-verse poem that discusses my thoughts about "how ultra-Orthodox Jewish women" are treated and how they don't deserve to live a restricted life against their will. The Netflix reality TV show "My Unorthodox Life" inspired me to write this poem!

Women are not puppets;
they don't need
to be controlled by men.
They have the right
to choose their hobbies, clothes,
lifestyles, friends and careers.
Women are not objects;
they're living things
that deserve kindness and compassion.
Gender doesn't define
the world we live, work,
learn, bloom and play in.
Women are not secret messages;
they don't need
to be hidden in their homes.
They have the right to speak,
teach, discover, enjoy
and be their gorgeous selves.
Women are not dogs;
they don't need
to be put on leashes.
Women can move freely
without feeling like aliens
and without internally shaking.
Thank you for taking the time to read another one of my social commentary poems about one of the things I feel strongly about. PS: This poem is only about Jewish women who have the willingness to leave their ultra-Orthodox communities without feeling frightened or biased. I’m not talking about ultra-Orthodox Jewish women who feel satisfied with their lives. Just clarifying!
