Window Shopping

Masks We Wear

Peeking into shop windows,

I change my style daily.

Getting ready for whatever's ahead.

Can I win this in jeans and a tee?

Or will it be a blue pleated skirt and blue sweater?

I put on a baby-girl act, something people want to see

to have simple power over it,

while inside, a volcano rages with dark thoughts.

Black boots and a khaki jacket are my only defences.

Does any of it really matter, I wonder?

What I wear, or don't wear, it's all the same.

People often make assumptions about you before you even speak.

Viewing you through the lens of their own experiences,

they miss the most crucial things;

the nuances buried within our casual conversations.

Ultimately, they seek to be drawn into the same reality.

Never exploring alternative viewpoints,

opening minds beyond the familiar,

while they're content with the TV chatter,

lost in their own foolishness and self-harm.
