will you hurt me? (love's a dagger)

here's a dagger
--intricate, ornately designed,
a masterpiece i locked away.
if i give it to you,
how will you use it?
---
(young prince,)
will you stab me in the back
with my gift and regret?
if so, you might as well stab me in the heart
so you can look in my eyes
as the light dies in them
and a different fire lights instead
--hatred, the kind where we'll both burn.
---
(and you, fair knight,)
will you toss it away
and with it my heart?
now i dig through the landfill
where all abandoned treasures lie,
shredding myself to pieces,
all in the name of getting it back;
now it's dinged and damaged.
---
(now you, the one they call villain and rebel,)
will you wield it
holding it close, even if it cuts you?
i will be there to patch every wound
as i hope you'll do the same for me.
and better yet, you polish and shine it,
allowing my gift to sparkle forever,
in all of its glory.

This is sublime, Alexandria and sorry it never got the attention it deserved when first published. Like DK, love the way you addressed different characters and their thoughts about what to do with the dagger and heart. Thank you for submitting this to the anthology!
Love how the narrator addresses individual characters in each stanza. And this had such a beautiful flow to it! Wonderful work, Alexandria!
Beautifully written!!! Great job, Alexandria!!!
