The beauty of being different

Every new generation a garden is planted

With time and care, success is taken for granted

Roses, daises, lilies, the usual

All selected because they are common and beautiful

But a few seeds sneak in, they are not like the rest

They don’t know it at first, but they will be put to the test

When the leaves first push up, most fit in just fine

Being so brand new, they don’t show any sign

But when the blooms start to open the differences are glaring

When people pass by they find themselves staring

They are not admired because different is offensive

The effort put into stamping them out becomes extensive

Less water is given, they have to fight for every drop

Then poison is sprayed to ensure any growth will stop

Many don’t make it, but a few will endure

Wild runs deep in their roots, and despite it all they mature

Then one day someone decides they like that flower best

It is not a boring rose or lily, it’s nothing like the rest
