Who am I, that I face each day
To stroll through every hour,
To take the ups and downs
To process the sweet and sour?
***
Who am I, to try to understand
Where my insanity comes from,
Where my thinking derailed
Where my marbles have gone?
***
Who am I, that I truly believe
That love brightens my life,
That peace softens my day
That anger cuts like a knife?
***
Who am I, to feel I am lonely
To dream of finding a friend,
To dream of having company
To dream of tying up loose ends?
***
Who I am, to ignore my pain
To feel it’s not worthwhile,
To feel there is no excuse
To feel it doesn’t fit my style?
***
Who am I, to live with the guilt
That I believe I am deserving,
That I believe I’m always wrong
That I believe is self-serving?
***
Who am I, that I live in fear
I feel deeply life’s stress,
I feel I am misunderstood
I feel I am a total mess?

Who are you, to judge me
To judge how I choose to cope,
To judge how I live my life
To judge me when I lose hope?
***
Who are you, what is your right
To disapprove of me and mine,
To disapprove of how I feel
To disapprove if I do decline?
***
Who are you, to feel I’m wrong
To decide that you know better,
To decide I am not worthy
To decide I deserve a black letter?
***
Who are you, to say you’d never
That you’d always play nice,
That you’d always give more
That you’d always think twice?
***
Who are you, to give advice
To believe you are the best,
To believe you do no wrong
To believe you’d pass the test?
***
Who are you, to always insist
That you are better educated,
That you know more than I
That you know I’m frustrated?
***
Who are you, to pass judgement
On what I need to do to get by,
On what decisions I will make
On what is right for me to decide?

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
