These precious pearls

Hang around my neck

Like a thoughtful gift

One that would blind

My pure fragile eyes

With a radiant white shine

Strong enough

To exude the charm

Clever enough

To hide the harm

The power

Of your tongue

Yet those pearls

Are the product

Of your deception

The layered lies

Coated carefully

Into something

Cured beautifully

Pulled tight

Across my throat

Until I gasp

For the slipping air

Beneath your trap

I snap the string

Your pearls scatter

No longer haunted

The illusions shatter

This is beautiful and feels highly symbolic.

Turning something so pretty into something so sinister! Marvelously done! The snapping of the string was so satisfying!

Wow, Alyssa, this was very powerful. The use of pearls in this is brilliant.

The last four lines really brought it home. 👏

my mind is a sewer! anyway, that aside there was a masterful, gradual shift from the beauty and elegance of pearls to the savage and dirty tainting of some beautiful used to mask a deception! because thats what deceit, betrayal and broken trust does! ruins the beauty with the ugly! powerful writing, Alyssa! so much so that I actually gasped at the choking line!

  • I love the pearl metaphor here...deception concealed by beauty. Very well done!
