Where I'm From

My childhood in a poem

By Sharon GentryPublished 2 months ago 1 min read

Where I’m From

I am from lengthy games like Aggravation, Monopoly, and Risk, played on snowy days and late days.

I am from the Living Desert and the Rib Fair, and the days I spent doing art with my grandma in the heat of the summer.

I am from big family gatherings and the made-up games that I played with my cousins long, but not too long ago.

I am from Kid Cuisine and paper animal plates, from Leapfrog, and everything Barbie.

I am from cartoons like Wild Kratts, Clifford, and Max and Ruby, which I watched so regularly, it became a ritual.

I am from Grace’s sugar cookies, soft and sweet with the perfect crunch of the sugar on top.

I am from long, sleepless nights listening to lullabies played by my silly blue seahorse with a glowing tummy.

I am from mini corndogs and dobbers, from rocket balloons and long days in sweaty trailer parks.

I am from lingering moments spent on my trampoline, playing until the darkness crept up from behind the trees.

I am from those things, those moments, and those people.
