Set off on a trip to find myself
No matter where I looked..
I wasn’t there
Headed to the Outback…
Checked under every bush
I wasn’t there
Not even in the pouch of that angry kangaroo
Tried to figure out whereI’d have gone
But didn’t know myself that well
Would I have gone to China?
Perhaps to see a Great Wall?
Climbed hundreds of steps…
Walked mile after mile..
But I wasn’t there…
Niagara Falls? Ride a barrel?
That was exhilarating…
Scary as hell, but.. fun
But when I hit bottom and bobbed back up
I still wasn’t there
Perhaps I wished to see some wonders?
In Hanging Gardens of Babylon..
I almost hung myself
I wasn’t there…
So I went to the Colisseum
It was colossal.. but I didn’t see ‘em
Stopped by the Vatican to ask the pope
But he didn’t see me either..
Probably should have made an appointment…
Flew off to Chichen Itza…
It’s a wonder …
But upon searching every stone..
Leaving none unturned…
Despite a rather large security guard
Still, I failed to find myself…
So where in heck was I?
The Sphinx had no riddle to voice…
Nor any answer to my question..
When a man seeks himself… where should he look?
Far and wide I hunted
Across the globe I trekked
Yet… No matter how much I sought
I wasn’t anywhere I looked
Finally determining that Elvis must have left the building
I shrugged my shoulders
And went home…
Mom and Dad greeted me with hugs
I slept that night in my old room
Read some of my old books
Watched the stars from my window
When Mom came in to wish me good night…
Tears in her eyes
Love in her heart…
I looked around..
Spotted the mirror where I had once agonized …
Over my first pimple
Over the suit I had for prom
Over how sparse my teen mustache was…
There… in the center..
There… Who is that?
Getting up from the bed I walked over
Sat on my old rickety chair
Looked deep into the reflective glass…
There you are…
It was me…
Found at last
Right here at home

And home is where the heart is. And one’s soul! I’m glad the protagonist of your poem found himself in the end!
What an adventure! 😁 Fun, warm and humorous. What’s that wizard of Oz quotation… “if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire I won’t look any further than my own backyard, because if it isn’t there I never really lost it to begin with”.. 😊 funny how I can remember that quote I used in a film studies exam twenty yrs ago! Anyway, your piece made me think of that.
so thrilling to read!
Love this! It's like a fun, quirky adventure that ends with the perfect twist. Sometimes, the best place to find yourself is right at home!
