When We Get Free

An ode to Tupac Shakur & Juneteenth

By Joe PattersonPublished 7 months ago 1 min read

When we get free our melanin will be the picture of perfect health.

Black kings and queens beautifully imperfect selves.

We’ll break the chains that were put around our brains.

With ancestral royal blood flowing through our veins.

When we get free we won’t sit in the back of the bus filled with pity.

We’ll lead the community and run the whole city.

We’ll do like Pac and the panthers and build a nation.

The compassion we have at heart will heal the nation.

When we get free we’ll be lawyers, doctors, artist and poets.

An impact made beyond imagining. The world will know it.

When we get free we’ll sit free. Then we will rise up.

Our souls will lift free. Black freedom always and forever endlessly.

~A tribute to Juneteenth & a birthday to my hero Tupac Amaru Shakur.
