When I Was a Little Girl
A Reflective Poem on Childhood, Growth, and Nostalgia
When I was a little girl,
I saw the world in shades of light,
A canvas painted in the hues,
Of dawn and stars that kissed the night.
The sky was always full of dreams,
Of things I’d yet to understand,
But still, I walked with open eyes,
And tiny footprints in the sand.
I used to dance beneath the trees,
Their branches like a whispering choir,
Each leaf a note that sang to me,
Of magic winds and hearts on fire.
The world seemed vast, but close enough
To reach out with my little hands,
And with each breath, I thought I knew,
The secrets hidden in the land.
When I was a little girl,
I thought the sun would never set,
And every hour was a promise,
Of more wonder I had yet to get.
The streets were paved with dreams, it seemed,
Where nothing ever felt too far,
And every path was made of hope,
With glittering skies and silver stars.
I would chase the shadows in the yard,
And laugh as if the world was mine,
Each day a new adventure called,
A treasure hunt, a secret sign.
With scraped knees and tangled hair,
I learned the art of being free,
For no one told me who to be,
Or what the world expected me.
When I was a little girl,
I believed that time stood still,
That each second was a miracle,
That I could shape with my own will.
I could hold the moon within my hands,
And fly on wings of joy and song,
My world was full of promises,
Where everything could do no wrong.
The roses bloomed with sweeter scents,
The breeze would carry songs so pure,
I’d close my eyes and hear the hum
Of all the things that would endure.
I thought that life was made of light,
Of laughter, hope, and endless play,
And nothing would ever steal my smile,
Or make the sun go dim and gray.
I used to wish upon the stars,
And dream of castles in the sky,
With golden gates and silver paths,
Where I would run and never cry.
The moon was my companion,
The stars my closest friends,
Together we would sail the skies,
Where dreams would never end.
When I was a little girl,
The world felt safe beneath my feet,
The earth was soft, the grass was green,
And every day I’d feel complete.
I’d wander through the woods alone,
The air alive with every sound,
The rustle of the leaves above,
The heartbeat of the world around.
I learned the names of flowers,
The birds that sang their morning song,
And every moment, every breath,
Felt like a melody, so strong.
My imagination knew no bounds,
I saw magic in the smallest things,
A butterfly, a hidden stream,
The way the wind would flap its wings.
When I was a little girl,
I believed in love that never fades,
That family was a bond unbreakable,
And happiness in sunshine's rays.
I thought that kindness always won,
That good would chase away the dark,
And every heart would always know
The warmth of friendship’s spark.
The moon would smile as I would sleep,
And dreams would fill my head with light,
I felt protected, safe, and sound,
Wrapped in the cloak of pure delight.
The morning would greet me with a kiss,
And I would rise with open eyes,
Ready to see the world again,
As the sun climbed to the skies.
When I was a little girl,
I thought that every story told,
Had a happy ending waiting there,
And that the world was pure as gold.
The heroes always triumphed,
And the villains turned to dust,
I never knew that life could be
Anything less than just and just.
But with each passing day I grew,
And learned that not all dreams come true,
That not all hearts are always kind,
And sometimes hope feels hard to find.
Yet even as the world became,
A place where shadows had their say,
I carried with me in my heart,
The light of every bright-eyed day.
When I was a little girl,
I thought the world was just a stage,
Where I could play the part I wanted,
And fill my life with joy and sage.
But now I know that life is more,
A journey full of highs and lows,
A winding road with hidden doors,
And lessons that nobody knows.
Still, when I pause and close my eyes,
I see the child who once believed,
That every dream was possible,
And every wish could be achieved.
She lives inside me, somewhere deep,
A spark that never fades away,
A reminder of when life was bright,
And hope was never far astray.
When I was a little girl,
I knew that everything was new,
And every day was full of light,
A blank page waiting for me to write.
Now I hold that truth in my heart,
For even as the years unfold,
I carry with me that little girl,
Who saw the world in shades of gold.
