What Would That Look Like

If There Were No Masks

Oh, for just once

To release

And reveal

The realness of me

And unmasking myself

To finally be free

With nothing to lose

Nothing to hide

I wonder which would I choose

Which am I most like ?

Not to fool or confuse

But one that soothes and appeases

Embracing the whole truth

Without blaming or reasons

Could I settle on one?

After so many changes

Go back to where I belong?

Could I sort through the faces

Discarding the masks

Putting them in their places

And answer the questions you ask

Would I like who I am

Could you like me too

If I could be me again

And you could be you

Such good questions and great poetry!

  • I love the contemplation and questions of who you are (and while I was reading this - who I am). It’s good to reflect on and ponder things like this. I feel it opens our eyes and brings us closer to our real person.

I love this piece. Great rhythm and wonderful rhymes. And the idea of letting our real selves out is so intriguing and alluring. Imagine what it would be like not to waste so much energy worrying about what others think and just be ourselves. Maybe that's why little kids have so much energy, they aren't wasting it on pretenses.
