What’s In a Name?

Not all of them are rosey

What’s in a name?

A good story, if you’re lucky

Or a bad one, only told over a beer or two

Flipping back through the pages on mine

I find little that is sweet, some unsavory

A first name chosen from a hat

No beloved family or friends

Lending their past to my present

It’s very spelling meant to cut

At the roots of your red hair

Passed down from an Irish father

Who kept his last name for another child

Another man lent us his out of a kindness

Later betrayed for an alcoholic Polak

No wonder you loved those jokes

Passing down humor, instead of bruises

My story is not the worst or the best

Just another human interest piece

Cut for space

What’s in a name?

Maybe a poem

I’d rather not recite

This was very thought provoking. It has such a deeply personal context and yet the question posed extends universally. Very well done, Shaun!

Reflective, Shaun. Our history makes us, doesn't it?
