What is Brown?

Of the earth. From the sun.

By Jonathan MathewPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

What is brown?

When the children say

“My favorite color is-”

Who says brown?

On the spectrum

of light

of the rainbow

Where is brown?

In a country

Divided

And I’m not Black

And I’m definitely

Not White

What is brown?

When they compare

my skin

To filth and muck...

Why am I brown?

When I’m

The terror

The invader

The villain

I hate, I HATE.

brown.

There is a secret that you can only begin to understand

When you hold gently the soil within your hands.

When the mud falls through your fingers just like sand

And grains and granules that cradle the sea

Resemble the dirt that creates the trees.

That between black and white

there is no gray

But only the same Brown

From which the Earth is made.

That when

Red

and orange

And yellow

And green

And blue

And indigo

And violet

And black

And white-

All come together

and melt into one-

I see, I see, I see now...

It all in my beautiful skin

Brown of the Earth.

Brown from the Sun.
