What happened to us

We had it all. The perfect love but it went sadly wrong

What happened to us?

We used to talk till the streetlights gave up

voices running into the small hours

now I can’t find you in the silence

it’s too wide, too cold

I think of your hand on mine

how it felt like it would never let go

now it’s just the memory

holding me instead

It didn’t break with a bang

it just slipped away

like the last light in a room

nobody wants to leave

but somehow does

Your eyes don’t look for me now

they pass straight through

like I was never there

and I wonder if you see

the wreckage you left behind

Just go back to how it felt

before your affair

and I’ll pretend I don’t know

I’d give every day we’ve got left

to go back to that first night

before the distance

before the soft lies

before love turned into something

we barely recognise

You have totally captured the grief that I know only too well. I liked the sentiment that sometimes relationships do just fall away despite everything that once was. Very nice, Marie.

  • It is sad when a seemingly wonderful relationship fails, excellent words
