Welcome Back Snuggly Season
A free verse poem about winter
Welcome back Snuggly Season!
I’m glad and honoured
to have this extravagant opportunity
to reunite with you
my dear friend!
I’m looking forward
to oodles of laughs,
generous bowls of homemade soups and stews
served with belly-hushing, simple-tasting balls of plantain, taro, almond, and cauliflower fufu,
fragrant bubble baths,
and tranquil nights of leisure and creativity!
These nagging thoughts
of awful snow storms,
impossibly freezing days,
perilous icy sidewalks and roads,
and shortened days
mess me up,
but at least you, Snuggly Season
force me
to create my own light
on days without sunshine,
grass,
breeze,
and flora.
Thank you Snuggly Season
for constantly pushing me
to embrace the small pleasures!
I need your teachings
to challenge me
and view the world
from an alternate perspective.

Authors note: Fufu is a West African staple. It’s pounded flour that’s served with different soups and stews. The word “fufu” is derived from the Twi (national language of Ghana) word that originates from the Akan people of Ghana.
