WE WHO HAVE NO NAMES by Brenda Wawira

Where we come from ;they don't give us names

To live up to

Do we have an identity?

Do we have surnames?

Yes we have

We went looking

We went knocking

They asked for our names

They asked if we had them

Written in the book

Of they who are not only named but titled

But where we come from;there are no names to die

Or live up to.

Then who sent you?

In the spirit, of those who were before us

In the spirit who left us

They did not have names too

We came .

They closed doors and windows

We didn't not have names

To serve us neither did we come in the name

Of do you know somebody who is a somebody in a place

In a palace.

Oohh we have no connections they spit it on our faces

We went forth opened our own doors

We forth found our own luck

And we are queens and larks

Of an empire

We sweat and that is sweet

This our identity

This is our name and only surname

For we who have no names;

Name ourselves.!
