We Were On Our Way

a poem for when no one's looking

By Dane BHPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

Before we fell asleep,

before we shed our days for comfort,

before the first yawn,

before we washed the dishes,

before the afternoon rain,

before hours we spent earning money,

before the work began,

before I begged the clock for ten more minutes,

before I held you, warm and content,

before these years,

before I told you I loved you that bitter February,

before I told you I loved you on that train,

before every spark struck,

before that hotel conference,

before that Thanksgiving potluck,

before your name unfolded on my tongue,

before we ever smiled in the same room,

before I knew there would be a way.
