As a Veteran I deal with Mental Health issues and have served with many that do as well. Serving ones country is no easy task especially during times of war. I wrote "We Are The 22: Part 1" after a good friend and former Soldier of mine took his own life. I hope that this visual poem will let others know they aren't alone and help curb the tragedy. Please watch, use the resources listed if you need to and share with your our fellow Veterans
We Are The 22: Part 1
Hidden deep within
Lie wounds invisible
Gnawing at the core
Of broken remains
The light always flickering
Between social norms
And what others call insane
Damaged;
Not beyond redemption
But to such an extent
That most pieces, no longer fit
Which causes pressure to build
Upon already weary shoulders
until we either find some form of relief
or finally choose to quit
Understand,
We're taught to fight battles
We're taught to win wars
But never how to conquer the demons
That follow us home from foreign shores
And our country, Our nation
Owes each of us so much more.
We are the 22
About the Creator
Edward Val
I'm a poet by nature and a Soldier by trade and my writing reflects my experiences not only in life but also in war. I use writing as way to express myself and deal with the horrors I've seen and hope my words can help my fellow Veterans.
