We Are All Made of Stars

And So Much More

We are all made of stars

hippy sentiments, truth

glittering sparks of

creativity and life

light up the world

burn brighter than

though never quite

the sun

we are all made of stars

space dust, atmospheric

atomic sized particles

melded together by

the crushing of bodies

together

more than nine months

cosmic gestational

embryonic nebulae

when our formation

is hidden in plain sight

we are all made of stars

but

we are also made of blood

sinew, muscles, bones

with varying densities

we are also made of shit

pus, urine, periodic

menstrual blood

water, lots of clear

water, unless it's

past

the winding tracts

of intestines

and uterus

drink water

for clear piss

eat better

for less

putrid

shit

because being human is messy

emotionally, politically

societally, personally

bodily

we are made of everything

disgusting and unsanitary

made all the more beautiful

-

(performance directions, pause — allow a beat or three before)

Our creation is in the dirt

(performance directions, pause — allow a beat or three after)

-

The blood rushing passion

of love and lust and sex

and the pretty pretty gore

of intimacy

we live, breathe, eat, drink

fuck, shit, piss, cum, bleed

beautiful beasts, always

in repose, always

in decline.

Wow 😮! This took me back a few decades to my nursing days & asking a young Ortho patient if his bowels had opened today. He shot back “No, have yours?”😳😵‍💫🤣

Such an ethereal start and then definitely delved into the nitty gritty! Astutely penned!

We are all just bundles of mess, really. Emotionally, mentally, and physically

And like stars, we are truly a fascinating sight! Wonderful poem!

Love this! As for menstrual blood? Sometimes I wish I was a man with the pain my periods cause.

    Wow anatomy and beauty

  • My first thought while reading this was "Monty Python's Meaning of Life", "Birth in the First World" vs. "Birth in the Third World". (Or whatever they were titled. "Pick that up, will you?" vs. "Ah, same as us. We have two kids.")

This is one poem that describes the human anatomy/physiology of the body as well as what it means to be a human being. Good job.

Well-wrought! Ashes to ashes. Stardust to stardust. Golden.

"we are also made of shit" - what a turn-around 😂 wasn't expecting that. Great poem mate.

This piece really makes you think about our composition on multiple levels. It's interesting how it ties together the idea of being made of stars with our very human, messy aspects. I wonder how you came up with this unique blend. Also, the performance directions add an extra layer. Do you think it would be more impactful to perform it exactly as written or adapt it a bit for different audiences?
