Wannabe Sea Sinner

Go back in time and be bad

Only She

caressed countless cravings

hidden inside me

until consummation surged

unequivocal and effortless praise

a certainty

Azure omniscience combined secrets

now possess

a seven-year-old’s dedication-fused ‘beach bum’ loyalty

and delve headfirst

into playful mischief long held

ere the Ancients drew first breath

She toys with me

Taunts

‘ring-fenced-Mama-and-Auntie-under-umbrellas’ rules

who splash Limacol instead of swimming

Who sit on beach blankets

as silent transmissions of supreme command

unyieldable

This epoch of ecstasy

but

that hour-long stretch…

AGONY

Seawater beads

cling to brown limbs

and whisper wanton

malevolent desires inviting and irresistible

glistening my name in temptress waves

Mama + Auntie’s eyes glare intractable signposts of

‘a timer yet to run down’

My mini-browned ocean-kissed limbs

magnified through sea salt

in swelter-sun

(now transformed tentacles

and shameless flirts

with softened sand surf edges)

become darker by the second

How far can mini-me get on a technicality?

Wet sand is savior

when an hour is eons

When toes touching surf

aren’t actually swimming

After hunger

lured my cousins and me for

Mama’s macaroni and cheese + Auntie’s fried chicken with potato salad

*have mercy*

whilst a hardline rule

from unknown dictators reign

t o r t u o u s

Disobedience:

akin to a childhood near-death experience

Yikes

Yet turquoise waves crest-surge

a tiny body breaking impatience

on my fifth strawberry icicle

(Not food, doesn’t count)

Recon the tide pools for anything moving

different

minimally distracting

Trench-dig moats for sandcastles with bare hands

and pelt sand-balls in cousin-wars ‘til snorting grit

Ever-advancing tide…

as a lone voice yells

Time

and I simultaneously surrender

sizzling brown body and soul

to Her luxurious liquid lush

with turquoise

SPLASH

Author's Note:

If you were of that childhood era operating under the 'Blood Flow Myth' stating that blood diverted from the stomach for digestion after eating, and could cause cramps and drowning, you (like me) are owed a TON of backdated swim hours.

Kind thanks to you for reading!

Love how you're bringing the beach to us in this one. The vibe you had while you were there. Had to look up limacol. It's hilarious how this was splashed instead of swimming. Love how the lines in bold could also be read as a separate poem. You're spoiling us in this one. I don't even have to taste it. I know mamas Mac and cheese is goooood 😋 Love the ending. Such a fantastic day in the life, day out. Devotional to the ocean. 👌🏾🤗❤️🖤👏🏾

  • This poem encapsulated so much beauty and love. It was such a pleasure to read. Now you have me hungry for some Mac and cheese and fried chicken with potato salad!!!

I love this, my friend! I'm featuring it today in the VSS on FB. ⚡💙⚡

I got heat stroke and puked every one of the thousands of times I was forced to go to the beach, so I couldn't figure out what this was overall about. I was headed in an entirely different, uncomfortable direction. I was glad you put the bit at the end.

  • Omggg, now I need that mac and cheese and potato salad! Loved your poem! And I've never heard of the blood flow myth before but it's so unfair!

Haha this was fantastic Dani! I could feel the kid-sized desperation and loopholes just to cheat those eternal 60 minutes. That “blood flow myth” line hit me hard—honestly we should all be reimbursed in retroactive splash hours for that injustice! 💖✨
