Virtual Vigil
Keeping a distance

80 years old and
Time is running out on you
While your family and loved ones
Hold a virtual vigil for you
Getting together weekly to discuss your care
Through Zoom meetings, chats, phone calls
They monitor and decide your fate
During these last lonely days of your existence
From a safe distance
Choosing to stay away
When they could have brought you closer to them
They chose not to
They are not there to hold your hand
Or wipe your face and brow
They are not there to reminisce
They refuse to be a part of
The false narrative you built around yourself
As you denied the image reflected in the truth
Of who you are
They no longer seek closure
Through self-healing and therapy
Made necessary through your narcissism and neglect
They got closure years ago
When they got the strength to walk away from you
And build their own lives despite the damage you caused
Now your last days are being monitored
Through a virtual vigil
From the comfort and warmth
Of the homes they have made
Wrapped up in the security and safety of the nests
They have built in defiance of you
They survived you and now
They are waiting for you to die
As they hold a virtual vigil
