Her reaction had been to take the opportunity to draw his sword. He had no doubt she would have tried for his life. Perhaps he should have left her people living. She hated him now. He had sensed a cool interest from her as they had spoken, moments before he had given the signal that his men kill her kin. Some of his men thought he should have killed her, spiteful for the death of their fellows whom she had killed with such ease. But Laukey respected that she had acted as he would. He killed her people, she killed his. And she would be useful eventually, he knew.

In one manner or another.

“You will not find water there,” the woman spoke finally, surprising him.

“Where?” he inquired, eager to hear her speak again, pleased that she was willing to converse.

“The Ruins of Hrathen,” she said.
