Unexpected Moments

Entry for From Across the Room Challenge

Loneliness drives many a wild action.

Eagerness to forget, will do about the same.

Yet when these two paths, from two separate factions,

Come together, bit by bit, and fraction by fraction,

Love’s fire ignites, to start Fate’s game.

He was scruffy and lively, and full of spunk.

She was filling a void, searching for an energetic partner.

His bark stood out amidst the shelter’s funk,

And when eyes locked eyes the woman’s focus shrunk,

Creating daydreams, adventures, anything her mind could garner.

Burdened by memory, another sought a cure.

With the sight of one hound, his past goodbyes faded.

He imagined trekking and hiking through scenes of Muir,

With a love so blissful, tangible, and pure,

That the man charged forward, freed, no longer jaded.

Going by sight, by sound, by smell, and by feel,

The two converged to seize their newfound desire.

Captivated by the dog, they didn’t notice the real,

Their presences alarmed; they looked, they blushed, and they froze in their kneel.

Her smile, his “Hello”, and the dog’s bark as their hallowed choir.

Loneliness and sadness each entered a pet shelter alone.

They followed imagined promises of joy, splendid and grand.

But what they found was as real as the lives they had flown:

A love’s first encounter so strong, the skeptics may groan,

Until they see one dog and two people leaving hand in hand.
