Twenty-year night

for my husband

It’s been a long hard twenty-year night

Chasing shooting stars, waiting for sunrise

My eyes adjusted to the dark and so I couldn’t see

That I was missing the dawn while looking for me

Your name is written in chalk on my grandmother's attic

Somehow you've left a permanent stain

And isn't it strange

that I was right the first time

when I thought I found the one

if old flames were a candle then you are the dawn
