Jubilant, expressive
Mirroring faces and bodies
Too much in motion, yet
Afraid to take up
Space and time
While also freely
Giving away
Precious energy
Without hesitation
Between written words
Secret me resides
Hanging space
Necessary pauses to
Gather one’s thoughts
Those white intervals
Dotting sentences
Swimming around
Deliberately placed characters
Soft and blank
Hold truths that
Never fold into
Cliche, as so many do
When outwardly uttered
In a composition
Nothing exists beyond
Whatever frame
Has been selected
The painting I
Shared with you
Compiles deep thoughts
Complex feelings, yet
Dog hair and dirty brushes
Paint stained hands
Silly pants, crocs on feet
Reveal more of myself
Than any photograph could
An underpainting
Is often bright, wild
Saturating surface to
Slough off anxiety
Artists hesitate to
Mar pristine canvas
So we must
Break the spell
The moment before
I brush on
Cadmium orange
Prayers are offered
Unprompted and unconscious
Please…please
Become this thing I
Desire you to be
Then I begin
You are hard (and soft)
Reserved (and open)
Careful (and expressive)
A gift given
Without box or ribbon
Invisible
Intangible
Awesome
Sublime
What I truly am
Far beyond worn
Litanies and frames
Cannot be
Spoken
Written
Made
Seen
Felt
I learned
All of this
