True Strength/The Power Of My Mother's Calm
The Dragon Beside Me
*
Quiet, her demeanor
lending to a gentle outcome
Taking on his misdemeanors
holding them still, cheek and tongue
*
Never spoke a harsh word
albeit gibberish or absurd
She gently took the reigns
and led us all another way
*
She worked until her hands bled
but she taught us how to play
Meant every word she said
never letting pride get in her way
*
A dragon deep inside her
kept it guarded like a new pearl
Knew there'd be a time and place
its power to embrace
*
She kept her head and hopes high
found peace beneath the blue sky
Each night she'd gently trace
every single outline on my face
*
Reassured my restless spirit
whispered so we both could hear it
Dreaming dreams that seemed impossible
imagination was the key
*
Hope kept the dream insoluble
that lesson was invaluable
For the life I was to lead
stirring the dragon deep in me.
*
There are days I could release it
bringing forth a sense of justice
But I pull those feelings back
clinging to her bold instruction
*
Remembering the things I lack
a reminder of our sacred pact
She whispered to my spirit
reminding me to pause a minute
*
Take a breath and make a step
to offer only grace and help.
Keep my dragon safe
for the right time and the right place
*
My mother from her mother
so unlike any other
Held my heart and hands together
through every storm and shifting sand
*
That sweet and gentle nature
made me strong and kept me nurtured
Content to share the beauty of
that dragon with my own
*
My daughters know its power
never would they need to cower
Maintaining all its courage
when they were called on to engage
*
The beauty in that freedom
was there if er' they needed
Strength passed through generations down
like rain puddled on the ground
*
Absorbed into our spirits
with wherewithal to receive it
Creating an intricate map
to guide us along it's hallowed path
*
A stronger dragon through our bloodline
connecting the ties that love binds
Growing stronger with the power
each keep locked deep down inside
*
Preparing for the battle
and the new song of deaths rattle
To the force that stands against
the power our dragons represent
*
Strength isn't always forceful
it's found in tiny bite sized morsels
Feeding the desire to excel
equivalent to equal, paradoxical parallel
*
Knowing the power here within us
we know that nothing can deter us
Mild and meek is just a mask
to help to accomplish any task
*
Soft and supple on the outside
bold and mighty on the inside
A promised ride and die tribe
very few words can describe
*
Never to fear the path before me
or the darkness that surrounds me
For the dragon that is beside me
lights the fire deep within
*
Strong and tireless its fury
on the days that I am weary
For what could stand against me
when I'm traveling as them
*
Never lost or left unheeding
when for me he is competing
Together he completes
the parts once missing here in me
*
Thanks to my mother's faithful patience
and her mother's gentle balance
Through any complications
I will exceed my expectations
*
Allowing this mighty dragon
to abide inside my heart
So that no matter what may happen
we are never far apart
*
Creating universes
casting out the devils curses
The dragon reasserts
and sets my feet on solid ground
*
A tender reed once was my spirit
pure and temperate the lyric
My dragon song erupting
with the power to astound

I thought this was beautiful and I really loved the line - strength isn’t always forceful.
Beautiful and powerful piece. Well done, my friend.
The power of parenthood and all that surround you at various stages of living.
Kelli this is so pignant an beautiful- I love the powerful but dormant dragon that know its own strength and chooses mindfully when to use it. And such lovely testament to your mum and gradmother, so, so well crafted- thank you so much for contributing to the 'Challange'!
That dragon is most powerful & fearsome which never has to breathe its fire..., but always knows it can. Something tells me your ex believes you've unleashed your dragon upon him. I believe he has no idea.
Wow, such a powerful and beautiful poem.
Dreams, dragons, and devils all play in my mind and commingle. Exquisite wording lends to a sense that creates the powerful imagery and creativeness espoused by this poem. It suggests a powerful mind bent on showing complete imagination.
