Walls so tall and strong
Built with the help of past
“lovers” and “friends”
How kind of them to lend a hand
Getting up stronger
Getting up quicker
Gaining more insight
Each time gaining more depth
Surprisingly, she makes it look graceful
The way she discovered and explored
Picking up the broken pieces
Some edges sharp and jagged
Some edges smooth and polished
Beautiful in colors, textures, shades, and shapes
An array of shimmering colors
Once taken for granted
Now these pieces adorn these walls
Swirled together in a design
Each piece placed with intention
Hand placed by the artist herself
Glistening in rain or shine
Capturing light and reflecting it back
Like a prism
Her vivid reflection
Dances in the iridescent mosaic
A tear rolls down her cheek
She lifts herself up with her smile
She almost doesn't recognize
The woman she started this journey with
The woman she started this journey for
What a bittersweet moment to stop and reflect
A journey of grief and pain
A journey of healing and growth
She chose to love again
How brave of her
This time she chose herself
Reclaiming her peace and joy
Embracing her strengths and weaknesses
Fostering her creativity and passions
Knowing that she is intelligent
Affirming that she is worthy is empowering
Finding stability in setting boundaries is liberating
Illuminating her true colors
She chose to heal for herself
She chose to heal for her grandma
She chose to heal for her mom
She chose to heal for her sisters
She chose to grow for their daughters
In love, she has fallen
Intune with the heartbeat of her ancestors
Confident in her intuition
Aggressively protecting her well being
Sustainably and simultaneously able
To love herself and others now
This is the type of love she teaches
This is the type of love she learned
As she picked up every broken piece
Spending hours of labor
Tending years to this masterpiece
Drifting to sleep, envisioning and dreaming
Waking up only to journal about her again
Priceless
She smiles at her reflection
Speaking words of truth and affirmations

I will build you up instead of reinforcing walls

Every Creature Has a Backstory
The room of my apartment felt dark and the walls seemed as though they were caving in on me. Reflecting back on this chapter of my life, everything seemed as though I was seeing life through a black and white filter. The depression I found myself in, muted the colors and noises around me. I barely had enough energy to do the bare minimum-- often just enough to save me from getting fired from work. For an overachiever like myself, coasting hit my pride hard. I would muster up just enough strength to get out of bed only to find myself in the shower, crumpled into a ball, my chest throbbing with excruciating pain. I sat there sobbing and grabbing my chest until the shower turned ice cold. Maybe the worst part of it all was finally getting to work and acting like everything was fine. Gosh, it would take a lot of energy to perform and put on a show for everyone.
