Troubling Relationships

“Mastering their mighty superiority..”

UN-conscious, must protect oneself at all costs,

So as not to be seen for all they truly are -

The other remembers who they were, but can’t pull them back,

The other has been manipulated to suit your needs,

Rather than console, support and instead they exclude.

Do they remember times of harmony long-ago- have these ceased to exist?

Wiped-out like a ‘damn spot’ to master their mighty ‘su-per-i-or-it-y’,

Were you always like this or did time beat you down?

Instead the empath is on the journey to heal others and themselves -

Rather thou rejects and inflict wounds, unable to protect and fully care,

A little compassion is key, yet first some self-compassion too,

My light refuses to be dimmed, now it shines brighter than ever imagined.

Perhaps they are two sides of the same coin -

and yet, the relationship must expiate.

Quick note: some left over ideas from my prior piece which seems to make a poem of their own, yet without the syllable count and rhyming structure.

Your lines carry a quiet resilience, especially toward the end. That light refusing to dim is a beautiful image.

  • Totally deep and thought provoking, Grz. You are one of the best of the best.

Brilliant as always Grz. The coin analogy is inspired!

I feel like this plays with which side of the mask we find ourselves on.

Ahhh yesss, two sides of the same coin. I love it

Love the layered intensity here. It balances reflection and self-empowerment really well. And that ending leaves a strong sense of closure. Protect your light—it’s too bright to be dimmed by anyone else. ✨

Self compassion can be a tough task master. Excellent writing Grz.

  • Self compassion is my personal saviour from the wraths of my unseen past. Funny how we can look at another person, even ourselves at times and see just a simple smile, well place whilst inside everyone is a hell of a lot more going on. Excellent piece Grz!

Aarsh Malik nailed it, and like Dharr & Tiffany: I loved it!

  • Oooo, expiate is a new word for me. Loved your poem!

A powerful exploration of empathy and self-preservation. The contrast between “protect oneself” and “heal others” really highlights the tension between compassion and self-respect.
