The cost of being a young woman
so free
so young
so fragile
so confused
the society we live in today makes it hard to be confident
strips young woman of their esteem
strips away the idea that beauty is from within
preaches that beauty is the colour of your skin
that if u are a fully figured woman of colour u do not fit in
the world today forces young woman to be slaves inevitably, inevitably they are forced to be what they are not
young woman trade their sexuality for affirmations
trade self esteem for appreciation
man prey on weak souls then they call them whores
forgetting they helped them destroy themselves
tricking them to trade sexuality for infatuations
naïve, they fall in
scared, they wallow in pity
scorned they are consumed with fury
it is not by choice they are gullible
the media preaches dependency
it teaches less responsibility and more ignorance, arrogance being the cherry on top
they traded their freedom to be on top

A Dart at Dusk
Seconds ago, the sullen sun set on the two of us… my exuberant furry companion and me. A fresh breeze embraces us, delivering welcome relief from the day’s oppressive heat. His typical stumbling and staggering along — apace with a sloth — has turned into trip-trapping, high-stepping, almost skipping along.
