Tortured Sleep

When I Close My Eyes

My worries,

Bundled tightly,

Like neatly wrapped gifts,

Wait to be opened,

As my mind drifts,

Into unchartered space,

I close my eyes,

And wait,

For those troubles,

To rise to the surface,

Like agitated bubbles,

Ready for release,

Running rampant,

Untamed and wild,

Free to pull and tug,

On taught nerves,

A heavy potent drug,

Infiltrating my brain,

When all I wish,

Is to lie in a field of poppies,

To feel nothing but calm,

A salve for the burning questions,

The stinging in my palm,

To slip beneath the veil of slumber,

Until I begin to lose touch,

Click my heels three times,

Take me back home,

To a fantasy place,

Where my mind does not roam,

Where there is no panic,

Where all is at rest,

Nothing to kick up the dust,

Where all thoughts cease,

No chaos or fear,

Only peace,

And blissful sleep.

I remember this one. Beautiful and how I long for as peaceful a sleep as the one described in this. Stunning work, given the brevity in each line. Thank you for sharing this one as part of your submissions for the anthology. Got another chance to read it, at the very least! Will let you know in the comments section of the piece I choose which one it is when I make my decision! Thank you again and well done again!

Wow, Alyssa! This really captured the progression through phases of falling asleep! Love the Wizard of Oz references too!

This was so enticing Alyssa! With the nods to Wicked/ Wizard of Oz and the darker scenes in it. I appreciate the sense of longing you were able to covey with this poem! Nicely done!!
