She lost her innocence well before she hit her teens,
She learned the way of the world before she started school,
She realised early on that life was totally unfair,
And still — still she gave her heart free rein and let it rule.
******
For awhile anyway,
She tried to leave her heart intact; unburdened and free,
But heartbreaks take their toll, especially when they accumulate,
Betrayed, broken, discarded, unworthy of love was she!
******
She vowed to never open her heart to anyone,
It was not just shuttered, but locked, bolted, deadlocked, fucken welded and heat sealed,
She found strength in the cold, peace in her solitude,
Her ice-princess persona utilised as the perfect shield.
******
Until she met you,
The only one capable of ungluing her scowl,
Obtaining the key that unlocks her all,
Well done brave fellow, now take a bow.
******
Don’t take for granted this wonderful gift,
For the true beauty in loving a guarded girl,
It’s want not need that wins the day,
And that’s when the pure magic of love will unfurl.
******
See, she needs no one,
She gave up on needing anyone other than herself,
The fact she wants you, not needs you,
Is why she chose you from all those on the shelf.
******
That, my friend, is a treasure,
A true and rare gift indeed,
Hold it safely, for it’s more precious than gold,
You’ve endeavoured to see a broken heart be freed.
About the Creator

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This one kind of hits home actually. My lovely wife and her twin sister were victims of horrible abuse from an extremely young age until age 16. I brought her out of her shell and back into the world. She is a strong, independent woman and I am proud of her … Most would have been totally broken. So, thank you. 🥲❤️🥲
Oooo, ungluing her scowl, I especially loved that!
