To Disappear, You Must First Appear

A Guide to Becoming Lost For a Fee

By D.J. BullockPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

To disappear means to cease to be visible or exist, go missing or become lost.

It’s an action rooted in absence which means it comes with a cost.

If ever you wish to truly disappear, you have to first actually appear.

You have to be an entity someone knows and maybe even holds dear.

You must be someone is who is seen and felt and heard.

Your presence must take root and your name be more than just a word.

It must take on a legacy, no matter how big or small.

You must show up and live and fight and give your all.

You must love and cry and bleed and stand tall.

Or else… did you really exist? Can you really become lost?

Will you have even created something worthy of paying the cost?

Before you answer, know that the second step in disappearing is deciding to leave.

It’s a harder decision than one may think so don’t make the mistake of being naive,

Because achieving the first steps means being intertwined in connections.

It’s birthed attachments, beliefs, memories, and even affections.

You’ve created a presence that’s taken root, your name more than just a word.

You’ve become someone who is seen and felt and heard.

And when you decide to disappear, when you truly decide to leave,

All those who’ve seen and felt and heard you will be left to grieve.

The cost of an action rooted in absence comes with a price.

And all those that feel that absence must pay for the sacrifice.

So now that you really exist, can you really become lost?

Now that you’ve created something worthy of paying the cost…
