Through A Darker Lens
a poem by Renae Hall (@The0penJ0urnal)

A world where one shade is different from the next,
A place where we all find it hard to connect.
Where the beauty of colour is perceived differently,
Whilst we wait for social justice to set us free.
Would it be easier if there was no colour at all?
To save us from judgment, pain and ridicule.
You describe yourselves as pink, red and sometimes pale.
So why can’t you accept all colours no matter the scale?
We’re pink with softness, often gentle and kind,
But you have already created other perceptions in your mind.
We’re red with passion, power and love,
Hoping to gain acceptance from the systems above.
Our hearts are filled with so many vibrant emotions,
Yet we spend our lives in fear, wondering if we are too outspoken.
We are labelled as angry, confused and distressed.
Was this not what you expected after years of being oppressed.
What do we have to do for you to see us for who we are?
As normal human beings who are easily scarred.
We all have different experiences, personalities and names,
If only we all realised that we are one and the same.
We all crave feelings of joy, excitement and validation,
A society with less judgement and more liberation.
If you take all the colours and merge them into one.
Imagine what the human race could become.
