Thoughts of a Driving Athiest

The passing thoughts of a Night-Shift worker going home

By Christopher FrancisPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

10:40 P.M.

Could’ve left early for an emergency

Break the monotony of the moment

But instead I just drive home like normal

40 minutes to go

I could live closer

I could sleep more

Sleep when you’re dead though

Good advice, Dad

But I don’t want to live closer to where I work

Cause then I just live to work and miss out on life

Music to pass the time?

I’ve only got Muse

Absolution

Let someone else fill my head with thoughts

10:52 P.M. by the first exit

I wonder if I should call someone?

Just to talk

I haven’t talked to anyone all day

That happens a lot. Not too much but enough to be noticeable

It is late though?

So they may not answer

I like this song

It’s raining

Less people driving tonight because of it

Good, people suck at driving

Still it’s raining

The bridge will be hell then. People suck at driving so add rain on a long bridge and you’re asking for trouble

But not me

I can handle it

11:06 P.M. for the bridge entrance

$3.75 for the toll

That’s outrageous

But it’s made the bridge I guess

I just wish I wasn’t the one paying for it

It’s not like I can’t afford it but it’s enough to be a nuisance

It’s expensive having a car

Cars are just expensive

And if they break down then they get even more so

Like that guy in the breakdown lane

That looks expensive

11:10 P.M. halfway up the bridge

Glad I’m not them

In this rain, broken down on the bridge

Rain whipping around, winds gusting, pissing cold, hell I almost hit them because, wait,

Their lights weren’t on

Their

Lights

Were their lights on?

11:11 P.M.

I can’t see

Maybe they were, I just went by too fast

I wasn’t looking

Maybe they just ran out of gas, yeah

But you don’t need gas for the lights

Then maybe it’s the alternator, car can’t generate anymore power then the car died cause they were moving too slow up the incline. But the car wouldn’t stop moving totally because of that, it just wouldn’t start up again because of the inertia it previously had. If the alternator went then the car would keep moving until it’s next stop then die

It would stop because it’s dead.

11:12 P.M.

So they need

Did they call someone? They had to have. In this weather? On the bridge?

No.

Maybe they didn’t

Maybe they

Were they in the car?

Was anyone in the car?

Was anyone in

No, someone came and got them. They broke down, they called someone, and that person came and got them and then left the car.

As long as they called.

As long as they wanted to call.

As long as the car broke down

Yes, the car broke down

Car breaks down you call

That’s what you do

They called

11:13 P.M.

Did they?

Should I call?

I should call someone to check

But I wasn’t the first person to pass them by, someone must’ve called

But there’s less cars tonight

It’s raining

11:14 P.M.

Police cars, two of them, in the opposite direction with an ambulance in tow

They’re going to them

Someone called

I think

I think someone called

People suck at driving

And their lights weren’t on

Why didn’t I call?

Why don’t I call?

Where are the police going if not to them? A second car? They might not know about the other car.

And they might not have called for help

Maybe they need help and can’t call

Maybe they need help and won’t call

They need someone to call

Someone called, I’m sure

11:16 P.M.

I’m sure someone called

I could call and be sure, totally sure

I would want someone to call

Cause someone would call for me

I think

I’m sure

I hope someone would call if I was in trouble

I would call if I was in trouble

I would call for someone else

Why didn’t I call?

I would call if I was in trouble

But they may not answer

What if they called and no one answered

What if the call dropped

What if they can’t call back

What if the help calls and they’re not there

I need to call

I’m gonna call

They wanted to call

I would want to call

Someone needs to call for help

Cause you shouldn’t be alone in the breakdown lane

“911 what’s your emergency?”

“Hi, I’m on the, um, Bay Bridge and I passed a car a ways back on the side of the-”

“Yes, we’ve dispatched a cruiser already. But thank you for calling.”

Good. I called

Someone call me

fact or fiction
