There Are Those
There are many people such as myself,
Giving all they have leaving empty shelves.
Again the throng of users calls out for more,
Knowing full well that I know their score.
There are many who enslave me I’ve been told,
From times in my youth and laugh now that I’m old.
In my later season, my work hasn’t stopped,
I hear their chanting resounding loudly nonstop.
There are many who don’t know me this is true,
Only memories of my youth church, home, and school.
Yet, slanderous forked tongues wag unceasingly,
Hurt held back only by God’s mercy covering me.
There are many who use me daily I must confess,
But I’ve reasoned within my soul it’s only a test.
The life that I live from dawn until dusk,
Causes me to pray for mercy, in my faith I trust.
There are those who watch and wait along the way,
Hoping to find me crippled or limping someday.
It’s during those times advantage they take,
My life and time, all I had I gave for their sake.
There are those who’ll stand with heads bowed,
Knowing at no time did I turn from the plow.
And as the evening’s light faints into the west,
I envision many who might beat upon their chest.
You see, it’s only after I am long gone,
That some will wonder if they can sing alone.
For it’s better to see what you have all along,
Than see earth turned leaving only a sad song.

lovely piece
Dan, this is so personal and deep. I like how there is a message of hope and even a sense of peace within, even with all the negitive thoughts and pressures from outside forces.
