The Young Animal Whisperer

With his menagerie of wild friends

I am just a young boy, here in the middle of nowhere

I live with my loving family, but sadly I’m an only child,

The land of nowhere is a rugged and dangerous place

But I’ve lived here all my life and can handle the wild.

***

The rugged terrain is my own personal playground

I often wish I’d a friend or sibling with which to share,

But all is not lost as I play happily with the local wildlife

The ferocious don’t scare me as they know that I care.

***

Some days I roar with the lions as we scamper in play

Chasing the gazelles but they know I’ll never hurt them,

I stalk them through the dying grasses, yellow and dry

Managing to get quite close as I blend with their stems.

***

Other days are spent riding bare-back on the zebras

It’s as close to racing, flying as any child has ever done,

Dashing under tree limbs, having to quickly crouch low

It’s a dangerous play activity but it’s ever so much fun.

***

We grow our own food here, we don’t have much choice

There’s no ducking into town, as no supermarket is near,

The monkeys just adore our corn on the cob, so delicious

And I pinch a lettuce or two, as I run off to feed the deer.

***

The pumpkins grow like wild weeds, taking over the land

Always prolific growers, more than we could ever eat,

However, they are absolutely perfect fed to the wild pigs

Along with some carrots and the grains of our wild wheat.

***

After we have scythed the wheat from their dried stalks

I collect an armful of the stalks to feed to the wild giraffe,

I race as fast as I can, up to a large rocky ledge overhang

I may not beat those long legs but trying makes me laugh.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

i can almost see the boy "riding bareback on the zebras".This is a unique story that I enjoyed very much!

  • What a beautiful picture!

  • I loved it! I was never an animal lover when I was young. But from like maybe 2015, I love animals so much! Animals are wayyyyy better than some humans
