The World We Live In
This is the world we live in
War and terrorism is all the rage
Death and destruction around every corner
A school shooting the next town over
Kids get shot by cops who are let off scot free, while the innocent take the fall
Politicians tell nothing but lies; just to throw themselves into the ever constant battle for power
Racism and sexism and homophobia;
Guess we didn’t leave it all behind
We’re all the same, though to this we are blind
By building a wall, by setting up laws and restrictions, by rejecting those who make us great
Using our differences as strengths when they truly only weaken us
Though walking down the broken street,
Ideals of America shattered by my feet,
Our own destruction heavy upon my heart,
I spot someone of only five or six
Joyously playing ball in his little lawn, a smile on par with that of the brightest star
I see his mother, leaning against the side of the house, a level of comfort only motherhood would provide
A soft smile on her own aging face as she watches her little boy, small laughs shaking her frame.
Both living in the same place as I and both so unaffected by this hellish life
And I think to myself that maybe this world we live in isn’t so bad after all.
