The World Is Our Oyster

How the world can be viewed, from one person to another.

By Jennifer MackeyPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

As I look out onto the water, what do I see? I see the whole world staring back at me. The cars, the dock, the bay, the world. Many possibilities, where will it lead?

I look out onto the expressway, and wonder where people are going. It’s the last day of the year, but many are working. There is hustle and bustle here in AC, do you see what I see? I wonder where they will end up when the hand strikes midnight. A new day, a new start, a new year. Living on the island, I see them coming and going. I see buses, and trains, and sometimes even a plane. Not too far is the airport, just inland. Sometimes I wish I could escape and be free of worry and go with God’s plan.

I look out on the dock, so stuck in the ground. Although this ground is submerged, there is still life around. I see seagulls and geese frolicking in the bay; the current moving the water all day. There are cormorants and the occasional dolphin, what wonderful things you can see when you live by the ocean.

I look out onto the bay side, where the marsh land resides. I see telephone poles, wires, and billboard signs. A maritime forest in the middle of a river, but beyond that is a train that doesn’t quiver. I see a boat pass, wondering how duck hunters won’t shiver. I see a bald eagle, perched on the landing, maybe giving me a sign from above that feelings are passing.

I look out and see a boat, of which has endless possibilities. The owner is the chief of fire; he has what I desire. He has a house and a yard; a backyard bar and company. Sometimes living by myself just feels so lonely.

As I look out on the water, what do I see? I see the whole world staring back at me. It’s a cold, windy day; the last of the year. So many thoughts in my head, but nowhere to steer. As I stare out on the water, I feel it reflecting back at me….

… the loneliness, the coldness … just like the sea.
