The Wizard of Oz

Happy childhood memories

By Sarah Fiander HarrisonPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

On this day that’s wet and grey,

There really is just one way

To cure the blues of winter’s arrival,

And that is a comforting film revival!

Sitting here with my dog in the lounge,

We are watching Dorothy in Oz with her hound...

Glinda has alighted from her pink shiny bubble,

And poor Dorothy has no hint of the trouble;

That’s about to unfold, until she sees,

Lying under her house ‘The Wicked Witch of the East!’

Far worse than her, Glinda explains,

Is the Witch of the West, who scares the domains;

From Munchkin Land to the Emerald City,

She has no compassion, indeed no pity.

For a girl and her dog stranded alone,

Away from Kansas the place she calls home.

This wicked witch has only eyes

For ruby slippers that she’s spied.

Transported by magic onto Dorothy’s feet,

There they will stay till journey’s complete.

And as my adult self sits glued to the screen,

It takes me back to a time that’s been.

A house called Wayside and Christmasses past,

With all of my family, I wish it could last.

But of course it has, on this soggy, grey day,

As this magical film whisks me away,

Back into my heart where memories remain,

On the November day that’s so filled with rain.

    What a fantastic one. Lol!

  • This was such a fun poem! I loved it!

  • A beautiful way to remember a childhood memory. I always wanted Dorothy's shoes, and I have a big heart for this film, which is also a childhood memory of mine too.
