The Windowed World
RE: SURGENCE; poems about mental illness

Hunger stirs her
from paralyzed sleep,
her mind shrouded
by drugs and perilous fog
_
Days have slipped by,
her eyes
witlessly staring into
a windowed world
_
Months spent hiding
behind raised walls
have made her a petrified skin,
unwilling to yield
to the sky shedding
tears upon her roof
_
Cracks form in
the cavern of her mouth
where her teeth feel like
deserted mountains;
her tongue the lake bed they guard
_
Defiance overcomes her,
briefly pushing a
wary hand out to the waves
weeping down the glass
_
But abandonment has
led to catastrophic drought
_
Water is
just an illusion;
a cruel trick
_
Without rain
her world withers away
beneath a boxed sun
in a windowed world
