In the dark of winter’s night
Beyond the shawl of white
There came some strangers here
I prayed they knew no fear
I counted four
The open door
Did beckon them
***
I tried so hard to call
Them in from such snowfall
They stood, unknowing, blinking eyes
Against the fire deep inside
***
I beheld them, there, with awe
They moved on softest paw
And looked at me with eyes
Full of such wild surprise
That human bid them near
Abandon now your fear
But, no, they knew my kind
The wild ones haunt my mind
For I did close my door
And then they came no more.
