The Weight of Waiting

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
Edward Hopper, "Cape Cod Morning," 1950

Has patience ceased to be a real virtue?

Can we no longer endure a long wait?

The claim that waiting is quite hard is true

But why does what's hard so intimidate?

Of course, not all suffering sanctifies

Some wounds cannot be borne, and lead to death

But courage defies fear and boldly tries

To wisely spend each precious, indrawn breath

We wait now, for some strange new days to dawn

To find out how a new tale will be told;

Uncharted times call for maps to be drawn

Real certainty cannot be bought or sold

Not all waiting must be grim and anxious:

Delays can make wise, patient souls of us

Ekphrastic

This is lovely. I should learn to have more patience while waiting.

Patience is a virtue more rare than gold and harder to mine. Beautifully done!

Anticipation is all! We have lost the joy of the wait. I quite like it: the contemplation of what is to come. There is even value to the dread.

  • "Real certainty cannot be bought or sold" That line is soooo deep and true. Also, waiting sucks. I'm like the most impatient person you'll ever meet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
