Somber skies and children's cries, thick black smoke fills my eyes, how did I end up here, In this desert hell for more than a year, every step I take, I take with fear, Around every corner danger looms, never knowing when I'll meet my doom, like my battle buddies now entombed, Thank the lord now I'm on my way, back to the U.S.A., where I'll finally find sunny days, I thought that I could get back to my life, but the nightmares keep me up at night, I'm home now but still I fight, In my head the war never stops, the bullets whiz, the bodies drop, in my nostrils the stench of decay and rot, I'm startled by the slightest sound, something breaks I hit the ground, living like this is like being drowned, Every day the pain gets worse, why must I feel this hurt, why must I have the soldiers curse, I served you and served you well, won't you save me from my hell, I'm in pain but you can't tell. I suffer in agony and silence, my mind a victim of wartime violence, my demons have now grown into giants, please just take my hand, even if, you don't understand, please do the best you can, I'm not a machine just a person, please see that I'm hurting, around every corner my demons lurking, I just want to feel some peace, to go to bed and actually sleep, to wake up and not have to weep, please God save me, please dear God won't you set my mind free, for once can't I just be me?
