The Vampire's Goodbye

She fell for a human, but time catches all.

By Jason Ray Morton Published 7 months ago 2 min read

Drop me into the fires, I no longer care

Let us not struggle with the simple things

The future tires me before it has arrived

Ready and willing to tackle things that aren't there

-

Thoughts have betrayed me time and again

Things that are regrettable continuing to return

What a waste of a life means in the end

For all the good that could have been

-

It will happen soon enough, I fear

The gates will be opened for my arrival

Too many things have been done wrong in days past

Not even there, and the howls I do hear

-

Forsaken by the world that once I protected

For none of them ever truly knew my story

Lost and lonely as the sun dips beneath the horizon

Watching it all burn, the things I erected

-

Still unknowing, what was it all about

Few of us have learned the lessons true

For there is only the one answer to share

And it's an answer that some might doubt

-

For all time, it was about the same thing

Not of the slumbers of night or the action

Nor of those we mourned and those we ended

Nay, it was not all about what you're thinking

-

It's always been about when we met and what was lost

For you had the thing needed most

There's nothing to say to your untimely ghost

But that you were human, and that was the cost

-

It was about the blood

That which was spilled and that which we took

As hordes, we trampled the world in the dark

Knowing you're ends by the sound of your thud

-

Now my time cometh soon

For each one of us shall have a price to pay

I can hear the cursed howl and I'm not even done

The hounds of the pit howling at the moon

-

As you hunt for me, my beloved, I'll soon be gone

Know that my soul will suffer for what has been

A soulless creature, never could I have been with you

The hounds they are a coming, my dear, Dear John
