The Ups And Downs

Life is to be lived

He dreams of a future of honey and lace,

Silky smooth skin and an endearing smile,

A warm hand to hold, plump lips to kiss,

An oasis in the desert where he can stay awhile.

******

He begs the gods for his plans to arrive,

For the dust to settle on his long ride home,

The night time hours to bring relief from the sweltering heat,

And the air waves to carry his message by phone.

******

He travels his destiny in a world of pain,

Disbelieving of a happy ending after years of torment,

He hesitates in the dawn hours, clearly unsure,

Is she a gift from the heavens kindly sent?

******

He dreams of a voice that haunted his past,

That took up residence within his head, much to his disgust,

He forged through the years building useless resistance,

Determined to forget her, as he knew he must.

******

Ghosts of the future tease his heart,

And travels well worn paths of misconception,

Catastrophic meets nightmares of his own making,

When he tries to rule through windows of deception.

******

He lays his head at night praying for a reprieve,

Never understanding he needs to temper his thought,

No misdirection is worth the karmic forces that’ll come into play,

Unless it’s horrendous tears of further heartbreaking sought.

******

Peace will wander through but not stay for long,

There’s change in the wind that needs to be tied down,

Once set in motion his fears will torture and twist,

Until his glorious smile has turned back into a frown.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
