Today’s All Ours

So live large

Today was my perfect day, the numbers lined up and what did I do?

I worked, I toiled, I made someone else succeed,

I set hugs from afar to a wounded heart, trying to stop the bleed,

I fought giddiness at just the idea of being alive.

******

And then I messed up!

I should have been elsewhere, doing something entirely unrelated,

I should have used the numbers, let the universe whisper to the fated,

And opened my heart forever more.

******

Did I leave it too late?

Will the numbers change the future as it’s meant to be?

I guess I’ll wait, while living my best life, wait and see,

Loving the days that arrive and let the rest fall where it may.

******

If the time is ever right, will I bite the bullet and bend at the knee?

I guess that’ll depend on what tomorrow happens to bring,

I’ve learned trying to predict how it’ll turn out doesn’t mean a thing,

Plans are made to be broken.

******

I’ll live for today, dream of tomorrow, and treasure the past,

Learn my lessons, beat back my demons, win one day at a time,

I’ll claw back my pain, fumble in the dark, trip, struggle and upwards climb,

While frolicking in the minute glimpses of happiness.

******

What will be, will be!

Life is too short to wait for the darkness to brighten,

The world too small to live in nightmares that do nothing but frighten,

The time is now; live, love and let go!

******

Trust that tomorrow can take care of itself,

That it’s this very minute that life exists,

And if it quickens your heart, why resist?

Today is the day to live large, to expand your horizon, to encompass all you’re meant to be.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
