The Unfinished Goodbye
A journey through memory’s stubborn grip written in a Villanelle.

In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade,
The traces of your laughter haunt my mind,
A hush in the night, where love once played.
*
Each memory a ghost that will not trade,
For time’s cruel dance left longing intertwined,
In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade.
*
A heart once bright now bears the scars displayed,
Obsessions born of ties we cannot bind,
A hush in the night, where love once played.
*
I search for solace in the choices made,
But find in every path a bitter kind,
In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade.
*
The heart’s persistence, relentless and delayed,
In every ounce of yearning, hope entwined,
A hush in the night, where love once played.
*
Forever drawn to what the past conveyed,
A haunting waltz with all that’s left behind,
In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade,
A hush in the night, where love once played.

BEAUTIFUL!
Evocative and lovely
Stunning work Tim! I'd love to hear this one recited!
So well woven together. It all flows perfectly into the last stanza. 👏👏👌
The opening is beautiful, setting that gentle, lullaby-like cadence right away. I love how you portray the memories—they aren't mere thoughts, but stubborn, lingering ones. You perfectly captured the compulsive feeling of obsession using those sounds in 'born and bind.'
Love, love, love this. Brilliant refrains that prevent the villanelle from collapsing into itself (as so many of mine do).
